What carpet extraction actually does

Vacuuming picks up dry dust. Extraction goes further: cleaning solution is worked into the carpet to loosen oils, tracked-in soil and sticky residue, and then the machine suctions that solution back out, carrying the dirt with it. The result is carpet that is cleaner deeper in the pile, not just brighter on top.

The hose is what makes the method practical in a real building. Along with the main machine, we use a hose and hand tool for stairs, corners, baseboards and the spots a wide wand cannot reach, which is where much of the grime in a commercial space hides.

When carpet extraction is the right choice

  • Vacuuming no longer brings the carpet color back.
  • Sticky spots that attract more dirt, such as old coffee spills.
  • Heavy salt and sand grit around entrances after winter.
  • Carpet that smells stale even when the rest of the space is clean.
  • Before a move-in, a lease inspection or an important client visit.

How an extraction job goes

  1. Dry vacuum.Loose soil comes out first, because extracting over dry grit just turns it into mud.
  2. Pre-treat.Heavily soiled lanes and stains get treatment before the main pass so the solution has something to work on.
  3. Extraction pass.Solution is applied and recovered with the machine, with overlapping passes to avoid stripes and over-wetting.
  4. Detail with the hose.Edges, stairs and tight spots are done by hand with the hose tool.
  5. Dry and groom.Airflow dries the carpet, and the pile is groomed so it dries evenly.

What affects the price of extraction

The area to clean is the base, followed by how soiled the carpet is, whether pre-treatment of stains is needed, stairs or other hand-tool areas, furniture that has to be moved and the time slot. Carpet that has had regular maintenance extracts more easily and costs less than carpet that has been neglected for years.

Carpet extraction FAQ

Why can carpet look dirty again the day after extraction?

This is called wicking. Soil and residue from deep in the carpet can travel up the fibers as the carpet dries and reappear on the surface. A second pass or a rinse usually fixes it, and it is more likely when carpet was heavily soiled to begin with.

Is extraction the right method for every carpet?

It suits most commercial carpet that is built to be cleaned with water-based methods, but not all. Delicate or specialty carpets, and carpet with a damaged backing, need a different approach. We check the carpet before we commit to a method.

Will extraction remove odors?

If the smell comes from soil and spills held in the carpet, extraction often helps because it pulls that material out. If the source is in the padding or the floor beneath, cleaning the surface alone may not solve it, and we will tell you if we suspect that.

Can you use the extraction hose on stairs and edges?

Yes. The hose and hand tool let us clean along baseboards, around furniture legs, on stairs and in tight corners where a large machine cannot reach.

What is the risk of too much water?

Over-wetting leaves carpet damp for too long, which can cause odors and slow drying. Controlling how much solution goes in and how much gets pulled back out is the main skill in extraction cleaning.
